How do digital signatures work for Solution Documentation documents, and what must be active first?

They give documents an approval procedure — only authorized people can advance a document.

Each SAP system has a public-key pair at startup (certificate in its own PSE, personal security environment) and can produce/verify its own digital signatures for integrity and authenticity. The PSE must be activated before use; signature data lands in the SSF (Secure Store and Forward) component.
